Kitchen Work XX: The Counters Continue

June 19, 2010

After the counters were cut roughly to length and hooked together at their miter joint, it was time to scribe them to the walls.  The first step was to mask the back splash with tape and set a compass to the distance of the widest gap between the counter and one wall.  Then I drew a line down the masking tape with the compass against the wall.

Look, look! A practical use for a compass!

Once that was done for both walls, I had to remove all the counter behind the line.  And that’s where my shiny new belt sander came in.

Belt sanding the counters to the scribe line.

As you can see, when I was done the back of the counter wasn’t very straight any more.

Wall-shaped back of the counter.

After the counter fit pretty well against the wall, I attached the build-up strips to the edges of the counter…

…and glued the two pieces of counter together at the miter joint.

Globby counter glue.

After I bolted them back together I screwed them down to the cabinets and then it was time to move on to the other set of cabinets and counters.
